Let’s talk about Disney+, a video-on-demand service that I also like to call “The Ruthless Netflix Killer”. Yes, I said that. And I’m not gonna take it back. Because it's not me who is saying that it's the numbers. And the last time I checked with Mr. Buffett numbers doesn’t seem to lie, unlike us humans.

There are very few things in the business world that kind of surprise and blow me out of the water. Disney+ and its journey as this monstrous video-on-demand service in the past two years have exactly done that.

I’m not saying that I didn’t expect the biggest entertainment company with both the finest legacy and deepest pockets in the business to do something like this. But, what I didn’t expect was the way how they seamlessly did that by being a company with basically no tech background like the other ones in Silicon Valley.

And no, having a lot of money is not enough to pull off something like this. So don’t think that Disney+ did this because of how much cash they have floating around them in Disney land.

Now, let’s talk about the numbers. Because they are amazing and spellbinding like a piece of art that Reed Hastings would hate and disgust to see. If you don’t know who Reed Hastings is, do a simple google search.

Before we proceed further here is an official note about Disney+ which is totally optional to read. If you already know about Disney+ skip to the numbers part.

Wikipedia snippet about Disney+: Disney+ (pronounced Disney Plus) is an American subscription video-on-demand over-the-top streaming service owned and operated by the Media and Entertainment Distribution division of The Walt Disney Company. The service primarily distributes films and television series produced by The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Television, with dedicated content hubs for brands such as Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and including Star in some countries. Original films and television series are also distributed on Disney+.

Disney+ was launched on November 12, 2019, in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, and expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico a week later. It became available in select European countries in March 2020 and in India in April through Star India’s Hotstar streaming service, which was rebranded as “Disney+ Hotstar”. End of the snippet.

Numbers start here and each of them represents subscribers in millions.

Disney+’s Quarter-wise subscriber count from 2020 to 2021

Like already said, this growth of Disney+ plus is truly surprising not just to me or the tech/business journalists across the globe. But in a way to the Disney company itself. This growth kind of broke all their and their investor's expectations too.

Mainly because of the fact that Disney being a non-tech company trying to step into this online video-on-demand service business. Which, as we all know, is dominated by Netflix even to this day as I’m writing this blog post.

Everyone thought Netflix would dominate this streaming space single-handedly basically forever or something. And actually underestimated Disney’s entry into the streaming world despite its matchless content base.

But with numbers, Disney has proven every single one of them wrong. The fact that Disney+ could go from being launched on November 12, 2019, to having a mind-boggling 116.0 Million Subscribers as of the third quarter of 2021 is just the pure definition of hitting it out of the park.

The subscriber base has grown week over week, month over month, and quarter over quarter for the past two straight years. “This kind of growth is as American as it can get”. And I love it.

Kudos to the Technical team behind Disney+, this wouldn’t have happened without them.

Hope this growth cycle of Disney+ continues and pushes Netflix to either an inevitable end ( which I would hate to see ) or a new realm of innovation in the streaming space.

I will be happy if the latter one happens. Hustle Reed Hastings, Hustle.

Thank you for reading this, and God Bless Everyone.
